  1. Work · Confession #41,209 · 3 hours ago

"My boss's surname is actually Farter. I snorted on a Zoom call introducing myself to the new VP."

I had rehearsed the whole introduction in my head. Three words in, the VP asked how to spell it. I said 'F-A-R-T' out loud, slowly, like a kindergarten teacher, while every member of the leadership team watched my face try to leave my body. The chat was on. The recording was on. I am updating my LinkedIn.

  2. Romance · Confession #41,184 · 9 hours ago

"Waved enthusiastically at a stranger on the train for six stops because I thought he was waving at me. He was waving at the guy behind me."

He was gracious. I was not. By stop four I had constructed an entire fake friendship backstory in my head and was mouthing 'I'll call you!' as the doors closed. He got off at the next stop and walked in a different direction without looking back. I deserved that.

  3. Family · Confession #41,156 · Yesterday

"Took my grandma to her doctor's appointment. The doctor asked how she was feeling. She said, 'Ask my daughter — she types faster.'"

I'm her grandson. I have a beard. The doctor looked at me with the exhausted empathy of a man who has heard everything, and said, 'She told me to tell you the rash is gone.' It is not gone. I am now a daughter in the chart.

  4. Public · Confession #41,103 · 2 days ago

"Tripped into a fountain while proposing. The ring flew out of the box. A kind stranger fished it out with a fishing net they keep in their car. They showed me the net."

She said yes. She also said 'we're never telling anyone about the net.' We are telling everyone about the net. Net Man, if you're reading this — your name is Dave and you said 'congrats, buddy' with the calm of a man who had done this before.

Methodology

What the Cringe Score actually measures.

Our proprietary ranking blends four signals into a single 0–100 number. It's not a vibe. It's not a mood. It's a math problem we built so a skeptic can trust the ordering — and so the most genuinely uncomfortable story surfaces, not the loudest.

  1. Upvotes (40%)

The raw community signal. One person, one click. Weighted slightly against accounts that vote in bursts, because vote-farms are boring and we've seen a few.

  2. Dwell time (30%)

How long a reader stays on the story page. A two-second bounce tells us the lede failed; a six-minute stay tells us we hit a nerve. The category benchmark sits at about 2 minutes 54 seconds — we average 6:42, so we're aware we might be a little enabling.

  3. Emoji reactions (20%)

Five specific reactions — 😬 🙃 🫠 😭 and 💀 — measured per thousand readers. The skull emoji is doing more work on this site than anywhere else on the internet.

  4. Share-out (10%)

When a story leaves the site — pasted into a group chat, screenshotted, linked in a text — it counts. We don't track where. We just trust that a shared mortification is a doubled one.

No story is ranked by who submitted it. We don't know who submitted it. That's the deal, and it's been the deal since 2015.
