A softly lit editorial spread of an open notebook on a wooden desk, a half-drunk coffee, and a single pen — the feeling of finally writing down a secret.

VOL. IX · ISSUE 41 · OCT 2024 — CONFESSIONS DESK OPEN

Finally say it out loud.
Anonymous. Untraceable. Free.

The most humiliating seconds of your life, written or recorded by you, published under a pen name you've never used. No email, no profile, no comeback tour.

THE ANONYMITY CONTRACT

Will this come back to haunt me?
No. Not even a little.

Before you write a single sentence, here's the fine print we wish every site had. Most Embarrassing Moment was built by a comedy writer in a Brooklyn apartment in 2015 with one rule: never let a confession become a confession in reverse. Nine years, 41,000 stories, and zero doxxing incidents later, the rule still holds.

  • 01

No email. No profile. No account.

The form below doesn't ask for your name, your email, or a username. We don't want it, and we couldn't leak it if we had it.

  • 02

Stripped of identifying details before publication.

Our 6 freelance moderators manually scrub city names, employer clues, timestamps, and any phrase that could narrow you down. What gets published is the embarrassment — never the embarrasser.

  • 03

Audio recordings are anonymized at the file level.

Twelve percent of stories are now narrated by the original confessor. We strip the metadata, run a light voice treatment, and never publish the raw file.

  • 04

You can request takedown, anytime, no questions.

Every published story carries a private unlisted link. One message to [email protected] and it disappears within 24 hours.

THE CONFESSION DESK

Your moment. Your way.

Write it, record it, or both. Toggle every identifying detail off. The form takes about the same time as telling the story at a bar — except nobody at the bar will ever see your face again.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Three beats. Then the world laughs with you, not at you.

A confession usually reaches the homepage in 4 to 9 days. Here's the path yours takes after you hit submit.

  1. 01

    Anonymous editorial review

A rotating moderator from our 6-person freelance team in Brooklyn reads it within 48 hours. They look for genuine embarrassment (not cruelty), scrub any identifying detail, and write a one-line dek.

    • Avg. response: 41 hours
    • Edited, never rewritten
  2. 02

    Cringe Score is calculated

Our proprietary 0–100 algorithm blends community upvotes (40%), dwell time on the page (30%), and emoji-reaction data (30%) — surfacing the stories readers genuinely squirm at, not just agree with.

    • 6.8M votes cast lifetime
    • The score is public
  3. 03

It climbs the weekly Top 10

Every Sunday at 8 PM ET the top 10 Cringe Scores of the week go live on the homepage and get syndicated to 38 partner newsletters — including The Onion's sidebar and McSweeney's — reaching 4.2 million inboxes.

    • Top 10 drop every Sunday
    • Winners get a "Top 10" badge

A note from the editor. We reject about 1 in 7 submissions — usually for being mean rather than mortifying. We do not, and have never, published anything that names or targets a private individual. Read our full moderation policy →

FROM THE CONFESSION DESK

"I told it to a stranger on a train. Then I told it to you."

A few reactions from past submitters — quoted with permission, paraphrased into shapes they'd recognize.

I carried the wedding-suit story for nine years. Nine. The morning after I sent it in I felt like I'd dropped a backpack full of rocks into a river. Lighter doesn't even cover it.

Anonymous, 34 "The Lime Green Suit" · Top 10, March 2024

I thought I'd be mortified watching strangers vote on it. Instead I read the comments and thought — oh. You people have done worse. I've done worse. We're all fine.

Anonymous, 28 "The Wrong Name at the Wrong Funeral" · Cringe Score 88

Honestly I just wanted my mom to stop being the only one who knew. After it published she read it out loud to her book club. I died. I also kind of loved it.

A SHORT MANIFESTO

"Embarrassment is the most democratic emotion there is. Every adult on earth has at least one story they have never told anyone. Most Embarrassing Moment exists so that story has somewhere to go."

— Devon Albright, founder · Brooklyn, 2015
